Kingsoft Cloud’s HCDN brings smooth media experiences

Rapid changes and development on the internet, demonstrates that users are heavily engaged in OTT streaming, live streaming and VR/AR. Gamers find internet connections are even more critical, resulting in more challenges for CDN providers to deliver a fast latency free experience.

Right now over 70% of internet traffic is coming from media streaming, and this number is growing. A top priority for CDN providers is to find out how to deliver smooth content with reduced bandwidth cost for all its users. In the 6th Annual Asia Pacific CDN summit on April 11, 2018, Kingsoft Cloud announced the release of the intelligent CDN 3.0 product –HCDN, which is a brand new solution for media and content providers.

HCDN: lower cost, better picture

HCDN is based on KSC265 technology and is compatible with H.265. This is a technology that will provide fast connect for high resolution videos and also content distribution.HCDN not only helps with improving video resolution, but it even supports fast delivery of 4K-8K resolution videos. This also lowers 30%-50% of bandwidth transfer cost, while delivering the low cost, high resolution and crisp experience. Today HCDN supports outdoor streaming, fashion show streaming, game streaming, short videos, long videos and also VR live/on demand and OTT.

HCDN can provide support for all the platforms and streaming protocols not excluding PC/Android/iOS/OTT, HTTP, HTTPS and HLS protocols, RTMP, HLS, HTTP-FLV protocols, maximizing all the scenarios and requirements for end users. On the network transfer side, HCDN goes through QUIC+CDN technology (fast delivery on Layer4). This solves the last mile problem for end users, especially in regards to latency and packet loss. Improving the first byte open time and Jitter. On the SDK integration side, an HCDN SDK can easily switch and thus can perform automation switch more efficiently.

The best thing about HCDN is that it can help save 30%-50% on bandwidth cost while still letting users enjoy high resolution experiences. Testing shows that the same 3 minute short video on PSNR-AVG testing with perspective of 46.22 and 45.89, while everything else remains the same, HCDN video resolution 741 kbps and X264 1300kbps,the code rate is reduced by 43%.

HCDN: HCDN can efficiently support video on demand and live stream

With different requirement from live streaming and video on demand, Kingsoft Cloud designs the HCDN architecture accordingly to meet all needs. On the live stream side, the video provider cares about keeping the same bandwidth usage but still show high resolution and clearer picture, and Kingsoft Cloud’s live HCDN solution does that.

By using PC collected HCDN push stream through SDK, this helps with real time stream by using AI calculation and compression, and this stream is pushed to streaming origin to be collected and processed. HCDN live does real time H.264 conversion ofthe stream for H5 users, and the others will collect HCDN to play SDK and decode.

On the video on demand side, providers care about lowering bandwidth use and provide decent resolution. So video on demand HCDN helps with lowering their costs.

This process happens when customers take H.264 video files from the origin and cloud provider origin and send to Kingsoft Clouds object storage called KS3. KS3 then reversely pull the video files from customer 's origin and automatically hits HCDN encoding system to activate AI calculations and KSC265 compression. Through HCDN 's professional system processing, the videos are stored in KS3, and CDN nodes will pull from them directly.

Through PC, mobile and OTT choosing to support and play the SDK and decode, this won 't affect the picture clarity and resolution, but also reduce bandwidth costs.
